Why the Font?
The two images below are nearly identical to each other with one major difference, the font choice of course! The image on the left has the traditional font, classic and understated, it is probably what a lot of folks would have gone with.
The image on the right has a more bubbly almost cartoon font that a lot of folks probably would not have chosen. It is called "Open Dyslexic", it is designed so that each letter is unique. What do I mean by that? No letter is an exact replica of another letter just turned differently, for instance the b and d are not mirror images of each other. The letters in this font tend to be weighted towards the bottom indicating direction of the letter, signaling to the brain to keep it up right. The spacing is also wider to help with readability. The 20% of our population that is dyslexic can read this flyer, some of them may be seeing a flyer they can actually read for the first time.
All of my print materials can be found in both the more traditional fonts and the more accessible font. Why? Because access matters! When we talk about inclusion, it should encompass all people. We should be inclusive of all races, genders, sexual orientations, religious beliefs, and abilities! Having materials in more accessible fonts, in braille, in an audio format, and in multiple languages should be the default! If you need my information in a more accessible format, reach out to me!! I will do everything I can to make that happen!
